Zamorano has carried out three experiments in hydroponic lettuce which resulted in a recommendation for a nutrient solution for the optimal development of the crop using the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT). From these studies, the project compared the growth and production of three varieties of basil (Aromaz, Genovesa and Nufar) under two rates of fertilization in two production systems, conventional and hydroponic. The study was conducted between June and July, 2008. Four stages of production, two weeks each, were evaluated for both systems, according to the phenology of the plants: Adaptation, growth, biomass production and pre-flowering. The change in fertilization compared treatments with 75% of a University of Florida recommended formulation in the 4th stage of production, meaning, using 90% of the total fertilizer with 100% of a University of Florida recommended dosage. A factorial, split plot design was used to determine the most efficient production fertilizer program. The plants in the conventional system showed significantly better results in terms of wet weight and leaf area per plant. There was no significant difference between treatments with different nutrient solutions, which ensures that implementation of the solution to 75% of the recommended dosage in the 4th stage does not affect the results in production. There were no significant differences in leaf area or weight between varieties, though the variety Nufar was taller. Leaks were detected in the NFT system which resulted in an overestimation of fertilizer. An economic analysis considering the costs of production for both systems concluded that the hydroponic system is 11% more expensive, not considering that irrigation was minimal in the conventional system because of the season in which the experiment was conducted
